Hints & Tips
The Christmas card scene of a family huddled for warmth round a blazing Christmas fire epitomizes Christmases of yesteryear and many still crave an open fire at this time of the year.
But a good fire needs good wood and that old pile of branches and trunks which has been drying at the bottom of the garden will be perfect when sawn and split into the right size pieces.
Splitting logs with an exe is fine for a couple of minutes but is a certain way to spend Christmas with a bad back if you are not used to it so here is a range of our own log splitters at unbeatable prices to suit all challenges from the amateur gardener to the professional woodsman.
The first is the MD 5-Ton Electric Horizontal Log Splitter which is both simple and safe to use.
The hydraulic ram forces wood to be split against a steel splitting wedge, and can deal with wood 25 cm in diameter and 52 cm long.
It is powered by a 1500 Watt electric motor and is very safe to use as both hands are needed to operate it.
Transport wheels mean it is easy to move around the garden.
You can buy a stand for this machine for £40 meaning you can work at waist height.
It costs just £159.95 – the recommended retail price is £279.95. Delivery is free the next working day and there is a one year manufacturer’s warranty.
The next one is the MD 5.5-Ton Electric Vertical Log Splitter, easier to use than a horizontal model and with more splitting power.
This one is fitted with a 2800 Watt electric motor and is another exclusive value-for-money machine.
The base plate has three different positions depending on the length of wood to be split and it can take wood up to 105 cm long. And it the maximum diameter it can deal with is 32 cm.
Two hands are needed to operate the machine and it has clamps to hold the logs in place when working.
There are also shields to protect the hands while it is working.
But even though it is strong the machine is light enough to be moved around on transport wheels.
This splitter costs £389.95 compared with the maker’s recommended retail price of £599.95.
Delivery is free within two to three working days and there is a one year manufacturer’s warranty.
Now here’s another splitter which is exclusive to Mowdirect.
The MD 7-Ton Petrol Vertical Log Splitter is petrol powered with a Briggs & Stratton easy-to-start engine giving plenty of power to cope with harder woods which are twisted and knotted.
The base plate has three settings and can deal with logs up to 104 cm a feature which can save time by setting the ram to the least distance it needs to travel.
And there are clamps to hold the logs in place on the machine.
Being petrol powered you can take it wherever it is needed on the built in transport wheels and you are not restricted by a supply of electricity.
Again both hands are needed to operate the machine and the controls have shields to protect the hands.
This model has a one year manufacturer’s warranty and is delivered free within two to three working days.
It costs £669.95, a substantial reduction on the maker’s recommended price of £969.95.
Now we’re getting in to some serious machines and the MD 10-Ton Vertical Petrol Log Splitter is an altogether more powerful machine capable of large more demanding splitting tasks.
The 10 tons of splitting force comes from a ZC OHC petrol engine making it a really sturdy beats capable of dealing with heavier ore solid twisted woods with little effort.
You can take this machine to wherever it is needed tha naks towheels and a transport handle.
The base plate is adjustable depending on the length of wood being worked on but again can deal with pieces up to 104 cm long.
Again both hands are needed to operate the machine, keeping out of the way of the splitting ram.
This one costs £799 compared with the manufacturer’s recommended retail price of £1199.
Delivery is free within two to three working days and there is a one year maker’s guarantee.
Another monster of a machine with massive amounts of splitting power is the
MD Pro 12-Ton Quick-Split Petrol Log Splitter – Dual Speed which is designed to get through large amounts of wood in shorter time.
This one has a unique two speed action, so that the wedge travels more quickly moving towards the logs and then slows down for the splitting action. And it then speeds up again to re-set to the start position.
It has a complete splitting cycle of 10 seconds no matter how long the wood being split and can save substantial amounts of time if there is a large pile to be dealt with.
The petrol engine is easy to start and the machine is really strong for a longer life.
Another handy feature is the front stand which converts to a tow bar with a pin hitch so you can tow it around from a garden tractor or ATV.
It is currently on special offer at £699, a saving of £400 on the maker’s recommended price.
Delivery is free the next working day and there is a two year manufacturer’s warranty.
There is nothing like a log fire, it not only gives a wonderful festive atmosphere but can save a substantial amount of money on more conventional fuels.
And you will find that an investment on a log splitter will re-pay dividends year after year.
