Hints & Tips
The garden in May is always a delight with flowers starting to bloom and the vegetable plot showing signs of a good crop.
But this is also the time to keep the mower and strimmer going or you may lose control and mother nature will take over.
So keep the lawn trimmed, the edges neat, the rough areas cut down and the hedges neat (but make sure there are no nesting birds before you get the hedge trimmer to work).
And after that, keep the hoe moving between the rows of vegetables and in the flower beds.
Then, as they say, your time’s your own to sit back and admire all your hard work.
So to make gardening easier have a look at these ten red hot gardening deals for the Bank Holiday weekend on a range of really useful machinery so you can make the most of your leisure and maybe sample a glass of something chilled.
The first is a mower new for this year and exclusive to us at MowDirect and already proving to be one of the hits of the year as it offers such outstanding value.
The Racing 5073T 4-in-1 Hi-Wheel Self-Propelled Lawnmower is a really versatile machine with a powerful 173cc engine, large fuel tank and a wide 50cm cut, so it can take on lawns up to around 1500m2.
And it gives you four ways of dealing with the cut grass – either discharging to the back or side when cutting rougher areas where appearance is not so important, collecting in the 65-litre grass box or mulching.
And it has six cutting heights from 20mm to 70mm.
The cutting deck is made from steel to give it strength and has a wash port to make cleaning after use easier.
The price also includes a spare blade and a cover for the mower together worth £50.

Of course there are areas where a mower can’t get to and here you need a brushcutter and this one from a German engineering company is on offer and great value for money.
This brushcutter is from the same stable and the type preferred by professional gardeners.
The Einhell GE-BC 33 AS Low-Vibration Brushcutter has a double-bearing mounted crankshaft and a split shaft to make it easier to transport and store and comes with a padded shoulder harness and a triple rubber shock mount to keep the vibes to a minimum.
A 36.2cc engine provides the power, another easy-starting engine with an automatic choke.
The strimming head has an automatic line feed and is easily changed for the cutting blade.
This exclusive machine costs just £169.95, £180 less than the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two-year warranty.
Another with a string of positive reviews, the most recent of which says ‘Great Value – Well Built. We (my wife, a slim 64-year old!) used it to clear several months of tough reed and grass using the nylon strimmer. The weight didn’t pose any problems and it started exactly as the instructions indicated.’
The Einhell GE-BC 43 AS Low-Vibration Brushcutter is a similar machine but more powerful.
This one has a 42.7cc engine giving more power especially useful when clearing the thickest scrub.
The motorbike-style handlebar and shoulder harness make it ideal for the amateur as well as professional with large areas of the thickest banks of weeds and bracken to clear.
And it can be used for long periods thanks to the extensive rubber shock absorbers.
It has both a metal blade and a strimming head, easily changed over with the strimming head having a bump feed mechanism to feed our more line when needed. Again the shaft splits so that it is easy to transport and store.
It is delivered free of charge the next working day and costs £199.95, a full £200 off the maker’s recommended price. There is a two-year warranty.
‘A Sturdy Piece of Kit,’ says one customer.
Hedges are really growing strongly at the moment and need to be trimmed back to encourage stronger growth but do check first for nesting birds.
When it comes to hedge tops it’s no fun teetering atop a ladder and this machine is the answer.
The Mitox 26LH-SP SELECT Long-Reach Hedgetrimmer is 2.26 metres long and has an articulating cutting head which will move through 150 degrees making it easy to reach sides and tops and awkward corners.
A 24.5cc engine powers the 40cm double-sided reciprocating blade and the full crank gives better power and minimises vibrations.
The shaft splits to make it easier to transport and it weighs just 6.5kg.
It is delivered free the next working day with a one year warranty and costs £159, £60 off the recommended price.
One customer commented ‘Good Value for the Money. Tore its way through my mature Laurel hedge, easily cutting branches of a significant diameter & the adjustable cutting angle was a blessing. A good quality product that I have no hesitation in endorsing.’
From the same Japanese company, this neat device is the answer to many gardening problems.
The Mitox 26MT-SP Petrol Multi-Tool combines a grass trimmer, pole pruner and an articulating hedgetrimmer.
The trimmer has a nylon head and a loop handle so you can get into restricted spaces and the brushcutter a metal blade with three teeth.
The pole pruner has an overall reach of 204cm so you can cut back overhanging branches without getting out the bow saw and ladders. And it’s much safer to do this standing on the ground.
The articulating hedgetrimmer makes it easy to trim difficult hedges with odd shapes and has a 229cm reach.
Delivered free the next working day with one-year warranty it costs £199, £100 off the recommended price.
‘Does What It Says On The Tin. Easy instructions on how to assemble the various components, strimmer, chainsaw. Hedge trimmer just slots on’, says one reviewer.’ ‘Quality, assembly and performance are all excellent,’ says another.
This next machine has been one of our best sellers for several years.
The Einhell GC-SC 2240P Petrol Lawn Scarifier has 18 steel blades which tease out all the rubbish which stops your lawn looking its best.
It will tease out moss and flat-growing weeds and all the other dead grass and rubbish which accumulates on the surface and stops nutrients and moisture from penetrating to the roots.
With a working width of 40cm it is suitable for lawns around 1000m2 in area and has a 45-litre catcher for all the rubbish, but this is best left off if you’ve not scarified for a while as there will be a huge amount of debris which is best raked up.
The blades are powered by a 118cc engine and there are six working heights.
The handles fold down for easier transport in the boot of a car – you’ll be surprised how often friends and relations will want to borrow it!
It costs £274.95 compared with the recommended price of £499.95 and has a two-year warranty with free delivery within five working days.
One review summed it up like this. ‘Great Performance. I have always hired a scarifier in the past but thought it was time I had my own. It made very easy work of getting the moss and thatch out of my lawn and was a dream to use.
We have quite a large lawn area and I can now look forward to having a great moss free lawn, and don’t have to pay any more hire charges, or manhandle a heavy machine about. Also, my new scarifier seems very economical on fuel, it hardly used much petrol, considering how much work it did.’
Now a couple of lawn tractors from our extensive list of these-increasingly popular machines. Remember with the right attachments they easily become a year-round workhorse.
From a leading garden machinery company, the Mountfield 1530M Lawn Tractor has twin cutting blades and a cutting width of 84cm.
A great collector of grass even when wet due to the air currents created by the two blades it has cutting heights from 25mm to 80mm and a grass box which holds 240 litres.
This is fitted with a handy device which beeps when it is full and it has a telescopic handle to make it easier to empty.
The engine is Mountfield’s own 452cc model with five forward and one reverse gear.
A padded adjustable seat, tight turning circle and powerful headlights mean this is a very comfortable tractor to drive no matter what the weather throws at you.
You can buy a tow bar which means the tractor has far more uses throughout the year – just imagine how handy a leaf collector will be in the autumn. An optional mulch plug is also available.
It costs £1749, £200 less than the recommended price and is delivered free within two to three working days with a five-year warranty. A recent customer commented: ‘Excellent kit. Having never had a sit-on mower before, I found this piece of kit very easy to use and would definitely recommend it to others. It does exactly what it says on the tin.’
And finally, new for this year a machine aimed at larger parkland, easy to drive where navigation needs to be precise.
The Snapper ZTX110 Zero-Turn Ride-On Mower will handle areas up to 10,000m2 and is powered by a 656cc Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder engine.
It has been designed to turn on the spot with two castor wheels at the front so it can whizz around trees and other obstacles and is steered by a pair of levers rather than a wheel.
There are 12 cutting heights from 42mm to 96mm and the cutting deck has a pair of wheels to follow closely the contours of the ground without scalping it.
It discharges cut grass to the side and you can but a mulch plug if you need and neater finish as you can a twin-bag grass collector
The seat is very comfortable and has a pair of armrests and comes fitted with a tow bar.
Delivered free within five seven working days it costs £2999, a massive saving of £1000 on the recommended price and is a great bargain for such a large machine.
There is a three-year manufacturer’s warranty as well.
