Ten best cordless mowers to tackle the Spring’s fast-growing lawns

A scary sight in the sky this morning.

Not bits of a Chinese spacecraft falling to earth but a big golden disc, which some ancients vaguely remember is called the sun.

Could this be the long-awaited start of Spring, or is it merely another false dawn?

Only time will tell but at last there is a little growth in the shrubbery with the first tentative buds appearing, even if  hedgerows are still weeks away from coming into leaf.

But you can now cut the lawn, just gently, trimming the tops to encourage new growth.

And if your mower has a mulching function, don’t use it until the grass has thoroughly dried out or you will be left with blobs of concentrated cut grass which will need collecting.

More people are turning to cordless mowers as battery technology improves every year to give electrically-powered mowers the same power as petrol.

They are lighter and easier to use with no trailing cables to worry about, and to give you an idea of what machines are available here are ten top cordless mowers chosen from our extensive lists.

And most are part of a range of battery-powered garden machinery where the same battery fits all, so all you need to buy are the device itself, not the battery and charger.

The first mower is the Stiga SLM3648AE Cordless Lawnmower from an established Scandinavian company.

This has a 48V lithium-ion battery and a 500W motor and a 34cm cutting width, very easy to push along and work around flower beds on smaller lawns.

It is designed to let you collect, mulch or discharge the cut grass at the back and has six cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm. It has a 35-litre grass box with a window so you can tell when it needs emptying and larger rear wheels to make turning easier.

And it weighs only 12kg.

We deliver it free of charge the next working day with a two-year warranty and it costs £299, £30 less than the recommended price.

And there is a wide range of other Stiga garden machinery where the same battery fits them all.

This next is exclusive and one we helped to develop, the Redback E137CQ-2Ah Cordless Lawnmower.

Designed specifically for the British lawn it has 40V batteries which will fully charge in 70 minutes.

This is another made for small to medium-sized lawns, say around 400m2 and has a cutting width of 37cm.

It has cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and a 40-litre grass box. A useful feature is a display on the handlebar to show the charge level in the battery.

It costs £329 compared to the recommended price of £397 and is delivered free within seven days with a three-year warranty.

Reviews of this mower can be seen here. One said: Nice Looking Machine and Does the Job Well . All in all a good product and run time is great.’

It costs £399, £60 off the recommended price and has three-year warranty and free delivery within seven working days.

‘Light weight and easy to use’, wrote another. Other reviews are here.

It costs £459.99, £30 less than the recommended price and has a two-year warranty with free delivery the next working day.

One happy customer commented: ‘The mower cuts exceedingly well. I didn’t time how long I took, but I’d still about 50% charge left in one battery when done. And I cut three medium-sized lawns. Later in the day, after the first cut, I had a neighbour ask “how do you get your grass to look so good?” Say no more.’

Other reviews are here.
