Powerful battery-powered machinery to suit the British garden – developed by MowDirect

Technology goes on apace, and that applies to garden machinery as much as any other walk of life.

Modern mowers are now lighter, more reliable and more efficient than those produced even ten years ago and the advances continue.

But undoubtedly the major development has been the use of batteries to power the machines instead of petrol.

Modern lithium-ion batteries have a huge number of advantages over older ones.

For instance, they will not lose their charge while in storage unlike older types. And they charge quickly no matter how much juice is left – no need to run the battery down before re-charging.

They also offer much more power for longer so much so that today they can be considered a real alternative to petrol power.

And on the mower there is a dial to show just how much power is left.

MowDirect has been working with Redback, a leading Chinese manufacturer, to develop equipment suited to the British garden using Samsung cells.

The result is a new range, light in weight but heavy in performance – we used a long-reach hedgetrimmer recently to cut back thick hedges around our headquarters and all concerned were really impressed with the results.

First, the mower.

The E137C Cordless Lawnmower (Tool Only) is a genuine alternative to a conventional mower, but lighter and much more pleasant to use.

Three 40V batteries are available, all compatible with other Redback tools in the range.

The mower has a 37cm working width but being lighter is more manoeuvrable than a heavy petrol-powered one, ideal of scooting through gates and along narrow paths.

The cutting width is 37cm.

There are five cutting heights from 25mm to 37mm adjusted with a single lever and a battery display shows how much charge is left in the battery.

Running times are: for the 2Ah battery, 25mins; for the 4Ah one, 50mins; and for the 6Ah, 70mins.

It costs £149, £50 less than the recommended price and has a three year-warranty. And we deliver it free the next working day.

Remember this price does not include the battery.

Another machine from the same stable which is lighter than a petrol device is the Redback E216C Cordless Chainsaw.

Chainsaws are invaluable for sawing firewood and lopping branches and can be heavy cumbersome brutes, but this once scores again because of its lightness.

It weighs 4.8kg excluding the battery which is carried on a belt on the waist, and has a 40cm chain bar with an Oregon chain and chain brake.

It is also designed with automatic chain lubrication and a manual chain tensioner.

And a large switch makes it easy to operate with a gloved hand.

Running times are: for the 2Ah battery, 20minutes; for the 4Ah, minutes; and for the 6Ah, 70minutes.

This one costs £179, £70 less than the recommended price. There is a three-year warranty and free next working day delivery.

Tall branches which overhang drives and branches need regular pruning and this great little device is just the trick.

The Redback E608D Cordless Pole-Pruner can be extended to give a reach of 4.75 metres depending on the height of the person using it.

It comes with a shoulder harness and weighs just 3.2kg, chain tensioning is done manually and the 20cm saw, again from Oregon, is automatically lubricated.

It also has a brushless motor to give it a long life and running times are: for the 2Ah battery, 25minutes; for the 4Ah, 55minutes; and for the 6Ah, 75minutes.

It costs £119, £40 below the recommended price and has a three-year warranty. We deliver it free the next working day.

The odd leaf is already fluttering down and it won’t be long before leaf clearing is a major job. This little device could be the answer.

The Redback E435C Cordless Leaf-Blower is simple and light to use – and above comparatively quiet compared with petrol machines.

It has four speed controls which you can chose depending on thick thickness of the leaves you’re clearing and it weighs only 2.5kg excluding the battery.

It costs just £89, £30 less than the price recommended and has a three-year warranty. Running times are: for the 2Ah, 50minutes; for the 4Ah, 90minutes; and for the 6Ah, 200minutes.We deliver it for free the next working day.E312D Cordless Grass Trimmer

Battery power: Redback Cordless Hedgetrimmer

If it’s a hedgetrimmer you’re after, this will do the trick.

Redback’s E522D Cordless Hedgetrimmer has two 56cm reciprocating blades which will cut through even thick growth.

It is also fitted with a rotating rear handle to make it easier to work on hedges sides and odd shapes. A deflector clears the trimmings as you go but this can be removed if it is not needed.

Battery runs times are 40 minutes for the 2Ah; 80 minutes for the 4Ah; and 120 minutes for the 6Ah.

Hedge tops are always a tough job when using a petrol-powered trimmer and this one could be the answer.

The Redback E920D Cordless Pole-Hedgetrimmer has a telescopic shaft and an adjustable handle. The cutting bar turns through 90 degrees to get to the awkward shapes.

The two cutting blades are 52cm long and the machine comes with a shoulder harness to make it more comfortable to use. It weighs 3.5kg.

Running times are 40 minutes for the 2Ah battery, 80 minutes for the 4Ah battery and 120 minutes for the 6Ah one.

And the company also has a handy little piece of gardening machinery for the lawn edges.

The Redback E312D Cordless Grass-Trimmer is light and easy to use with a strimming head equipped with a bump feed spool out more line when needed.

And the aluminium shaft is adjustable to suit the height of the user and a shrub protector will save you cutting down plants in the borders.

Running times are 25 minutes with a 2Ah battery, 50 minutes with a 4Ah battery and 70 minutes with a 6Ah one.

It costs £69, £30 less than the price recommended, it is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty.

Batteries are not included in  any of the prices quoted above for the device only. A 20Ah battery costs £79, 40Ah is £119, and 60Ah £149.

There are two chargers. The Redback EC20 2A Quick Charger will charge a 2Ah battery in 70 minutes, a 4Ah battery in 135 minutes and a 6Ah battery in 200 minutes. It costs £49.

The Redback EC50 5A will charge a 2Ah battery in 30 minutes, a 4Ah battery in 60 minutes and a 6Ah battery in 90 minutes. This one costs £69.

You can also buy a battery belt for £29 to make the hand-held machines lighter still.

We believe that the Redback garden machinery is in the forefront of the revolution towards battery power among the shrubberies. Certainly it is lighter and more environmentally friendly than petrol power.
