- Better than Expected
Better than Expected I have never used a rotavator and after reading other reviews I was a bit concerned with building and stone jamming problems. It may be my more mechanical background, but I had no problems putting it together, even with the pathetic construction sheet and non existent user instructions.
The ground I was working on was very hard (no rain in the south for weeks ) and with many large stones, yet this had no problem dealing with it and, although it did jam a few times, lifting the blades clear of the ground immediately cleared the stone and away I went again. Overall a good experience.
- Brilliant Rotovator.
Brilliant Rotovator. You will find that there is some oil in the motor but this is to stop internal corrosion. So remember to put in the 0.6 litre bottle of oil supplied with the machine. The assembly instructions could be improved by showing a detailed view of the clutch and throttle controls. Once assembled you can start the device, with added fuel, by moving the plastic choke lever on the carb towards you. Once started push the choke flap shut.
The machine starts very easily but you may need to adjust the throttle cable so the engine stops when the throttle is fully closed. The clutch will also require adjustment. The machine is powerful and I managed to rotovate my heavy clay compacted allotment in 8 hours.
The handle is a bit fiddly to remove for transportation. This is a nicely engineered rotovator with a powerful engine and is excellent value for money.
- Garden Rotovator
Garden Rotovator Great Machine. Went through my allotment effortlessly. Not too bad to put together.
Did pick up a couple of stones and jammed the tines but easily removed. One gripe on the depth stop - the split pin is a devil to put in so maybe it could be improved by using a pin with a hole in to go through the stop and a clip through this to retain it? But all in all am very pleased with it.
- Poorly Designed
Poorly Designed The gap between the rotor-guard and the tines is very small, so even small stones jammed the rotors every few metres. Having used a number of other cultivators on my land I have never had this problem before. Also, as soon as the soil was fairly well tilled it couldn't cope with going very deep.
However, the customer service from MowDirect was excellent and the product was returned without quibble. So whilst I can't recommend the tiller I would definitely recommend MowDirect.
- Made the Job Easy
Made the Job Easy Liked that the nuts and bolts were numbered in separate bags, easier to put them in the right places. I like the position of the clutch on top of the handle - easy to hold on. My last was underneath and pulled on the fingers.
Started first time, never had this before on any other. Oil was in already, even though there was a ticket to remind us to put it in.
Made a good job of my clay soil.
- Design Defect
Design Defect Small stones jammed between the tines and the guard every three metres. Although the engine was turned off, removing a stone by hand resulted in a severe laceration as the tines began to spin again.
It only works on my stony ground with the guard removed.
- Great Piece of Kit
Great Piece of Kit Compared to other makes of similar spec', the price can't be beaten. The instruction book makes assembly a bit of an adventure but I managed it in under 90 minutes.
I attached the guard before the tines - less chance of skinning your knuckles. I managed to lift it into the back of my car and when fuelled and oiled (two thirds of the bottle supplied) it started first time and performed very well on my allotment, which is mostly heavy soil with high clay content with the motor's 6 hp coping very well.
I did, however, remove the discs from the shafts as I found them very noisy - easily replaced should I need them in future. All in all extremely pleased with it.
- Fantastic Machine
Fantastic Machine Very powerful machine. Throttle control hard to assemble ands instructions not that good. But once built - very good.
- Good machine
Good machine Only moan is the positioning of the clutch, I would prefer the clutch lever to be under the handle bars.
- Overall a good machine for the price
Overall a good machine for the price Comes in one big heavy box so make sure that you are either strong or there are 2 of you to unpack it.. The instructions could be better for putting it together but that's a common problem with lots of things these days. Could be made more clear that you HAVE to put oil in in first. May be obvious to some but perhaps a clearer instruction regarding this in the book would help. Once together which takes about 2 hours, it started first time which I was amazed about! As soon as it started you could tell that this was a powerful machine. Took it to my allotment in the car by removing the handles. Again started first time! My allotment is very heavy and with all of the rain we have had recently, it was very compacted. Very important to let the machine do the work, don't try and control it, it's better if you don't. Had to do a bit of adjustment to the clutch but otherwise does a very good job.
