Victa lawnmowers does its bit for climate change

Wednesday, January 24 2007 14:52:06 by Editor

Victa In a world increasingly obsessed with climate change and man's impact on the environment, lawn machinery company Victa has taken a positive step forward by creating a leaner, greener lawnmower.

It's fitting that the eco-friendly version of the popular lawnmower has been developed in the country of Victa's birth: Australia.

Led by Dr Guang Hong, students at Sydney's University of Technology have transformed the lawnmower so that its hydrocarbon output has been reduced by 30 per cent and the fuel consumption has been lowered by 20 per cent.

In addition, the power output has been increased by five per cent, meaning that it will still be able to cut through the toughest of lawns, despite the smaller amount of fuel used.

Dr Hong told ABC news that their lawnmower and the engineering that had gone into its development would pave the way for the mowers of the future and that it won't be long before laws begin to restrict the use of environmentally damaging garden machines.

"I think [the mower is important] because it's addressing the environmental impact, so I think it's the first priority at this stage," she said.

"And I think the engineering emissions rate is going to be more and more strict. I think more work will be needed for you know reducing the pollutant emissions from engines."
