With the British Crime Survey (BCS) expecting gardeners to spend almost £4 billion on flowers, plants, garden tools, equipment, statuary and other outdoor items this year, it is more important than ever before to ensure that their insurance extends outside of their house.
Garden tool theft is becoming increasingly common according to Malcolm Tarling from the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Speaking to the Times, Mr Tarling said: "The problem is that we dont take enough trouble about locking everything up at night."
The humble shed alone will house up to £1,000 worth of gardening machinery and equipment, according to Gardening Which? and the BCS believes that a quarter of the two million garden thefts involve burglaries from garden buildings.
Mr Tarling is urging gardeners not to neglect their outdoor purchases when they are considering their insurance premiums this year.
"Because people don't expect to be the victims of garden theft, they either underestimate the value of the items they buy or they forget, or even simply don't think to put them on their policies. Yet homeowners have, on average, more than £3,000 worth of outdoor products," he told the Times.
