Spring is just around the corner and now all that snow has gone many gardeners will be looking to aerate their lawn in preparation for a lush, green carpet later in the year, which is why Garden News has reviewed the latest aerators to hit the market.
Largish lawns (and largish pockets) will benefit from the rotary hollow-tine forked aerator from Ferndale. The 658 Rotary lawn aerator claims to make 150 holes per square metre and the long tines were said to go deep into the ground to give improved drainage and air circulation to your lawn. In addition, it only took the reviewers 45 minutes to assemble, but wasn't exactly cheap at £39.95.
Seriously flash gardeners however, can go one better by purchasing 1,000-watt electric motor monster from Gardena, priced at £129.99. For their money gardeners will receive 16 high-quality blades which leave crisp, clear slits in the lawn as well as removing the matted layer near the surface, including moss.
Top of the class however, was the £159.99 Wolfgarten Electric Scarifier with nine double sided blades which provided the deepest cut. With five different settings and the option to buy a grass cuttings collector, the reviewers admitted it was "difficult to fault this machine".
For the more financially restricted gardener however, help is at hand from the good fellows at Yeoman and Scarlec, priced at £16.99 and £14.95 respectively, which both produce a sturdy, hollow-tined five-pronged frame capable of punching holes up to 12cm deep.
