Property owners are being warned about the likely increase in garden equipment thefts following the start of British summertime this weekend (March 25th).
According to research carried out by Halifax Home Insurance, claims for garden theft tripled between March and August tripled between March and August last year, with the average claim costing almost £400.
Typical items which may be stolen include garden furniture, garden shredders, pressure washers and grass trimmers.
The survey identifies that some of the worst incidences of garden theft occurred in Stoke-on-Trent, Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Southampton last year.
"With many people realising how much value they can add to their property by improving their gardens, there are now rich pickings for thieves and now is the time to take steps to avoid becoming the next victim," said Vicky Emmott, Halifax Home Insurance's underwriting manager.
Measures being recommended to homeowners include ensuring garden sheds, garages and outbuildings remain securely locked at all times and marking valuable items with their postcode.
Considering joining a neighbourhood watch scheme would also be a sound way of improving garden security.
