RFS recommends brushcutters for rhododendrons

Following the warm temperatures experienced last month, rhododendrons across the country have burst into life, prompting the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) to offer advice on how to tame this fast-growing bush.
Though their bright, colourful flowers are beautiful, rhododendrons can become a bit of a handful, particularly in a small garden.
These vivacious plants were once only seen in south-east Europe and western Asia, but now this highly adaptable plant thrives on peaty or sandy soils, although once established, it can grow on a wide variety of acid substrates.
Its aggressive growing patterns have forced some gardeners and small holders to need to cut the bushes back however and the RFS' guide to Rhododendrons recommends a high-quality brush cutter for the job.
Gardeners are often forced to remove the bushes altogether, since when allowed to grow wild the rhododendron can colonise and swamp woodland, valuable heath and grassland habitats, providing virtually no help for local wildlife.
In addition, its constant shedding of flowers and leaves at this time of year also causes headaches for gardeners, since the leaf litter leaves the soil beneath it a sterile and dank environment, considered to be highly unfriendly for local wildlife.
