Online price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com has issued a statement urging gardeners to ensure they have adequate cover for their garden tools.
With warmer weather on the way, many opportunist and organised thieves will be on the look-out to make a quick bit of cash through stealing and selling on expensive garden maintenance tools.
Lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge-trimmers and pruning shears are among the common items being targeted; with research showing that even built in items like water features aren't safe from a wandering thief.
Many gardeners believe that their home insurance will cover any loss or damages in the garden but the truth is that out of the twelve most competitive insurers, only Barclays and Norwich Union offer additional garden cover.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, encouraged green-fingered consumers to ensure that the cover they took out was sufficient for the contents of their garden and the garden shed.
"All providers differ on what is and isn't included within your standard cover. If you do leave the latest lawnmower or other valuable items in your garden, these may be easy targets for thieves or vandals and you should look to get additional cover on your insurance," he advised.
"Similarly, if you have a landscaped garden with expensive plants, elaborate statues or water features, you may want to shop around for the best policy as a standard policy might not provide enough cover."
