Lawnmowers, garden tools and DIY boosted by sunny weather

Sales of garden machinery and outdoor tools were boosted by the warmer temperatures this month according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
BRC's director general Kevin Hawkins noted that the summer-like weather had encouraged consumers to go gardening crazy over the last four weeks with items like garden furniture, lawnmowers and other garden machinery receiving a sales boost.
"This is a good result, helped by the exceptionally warm and dry weather which prevailed through most of the month," he told the Retail Bulletin.
"Now that Easter distortions are out of the way, we should get a clearer reading of the real level of sales growth as May progresses," he added.
Other areas said to benefit by the Easter sunshine included plants, gardencare and supplies, together with landscaping, decking and paving.
Indoor decorating did worse when compared to statistics from this time last year but outdoor paint trading was up, implying that consumers were focussing on improving the areas outside their house and not inside it.
