Echo issues gardening advice for May

May is the time to concentrate on looking after your lawn and maintaining the garden's hedges, according to the horticultural experts at Echo Tools.
Indeed, it even recommends planting new hedges now to get the best results for this summer if you haven't already done so in October or November of last year.
Soaking the roots of the hedges before planting them will be beneficial later, making sure to top up the water supply as the hedge begins to dry out - particularly during this uncharacteristically warm weather.
The dry climate is however, good for helping gardeners to get rid of stubborn weeds like bindweed, ground elder and nettles as glyphosate, the compound recommended by Echo Tools for the pesky plants' removal, can only be used in dry weather.
As for the lawn, the manufacturer recommends using this month to trim the lawn's edges using a quality strimmer, cutting grass and weeds from under trees and hedgerows and applying a good granular fertiliser.
Spot treating weeds may also be required for removing the ones missed in the April and thistles should be dug out as soon as they appear.
