Gardeners advised to ensure home insurance covers gardens

Theft of ornaments, shrubbery vandalism, and fence destruction are just some of the expensive occurrences which gardeners may end up footing the bill for if their home insurance does not extend to their garden.

That's the message from Co-operative Insurance, (CIS) which has recently advised gardeners to check their home insurance policies, following a spate of gardening burglaries and vandalism attacks across the UK.

Figures from The Daily Mail estimate that the value of many gardens now amounts to thousands rather than hundreds of pounds, with stolen items ranging from decorative pots, and lawnmowers to entire lawns.

According to CIS, the best way to ensure that the garden stays safe is to take away any temptation for would-be thieves by securely locking up gardening tools and machinery.

Gardeners should also consider planting thorny or spiky shrubs around the perimeters of the garden as well as putting up high fences to dissuade burglars from entering the property in the first place.
