The warm Easter weekend people break out their garden machines, lawnmowers and other equipment rather than spend it shopping, the latest Retail Footfall Index has shown.
According to Experian, which commissioned the study, although the number of Easter Monday shoppers rose 1.2 per cent on last year's figures, gardening, DIY and other improvements around the home proved more tempting for many.
Good Friday and Easter Saturday figures were down, leading to an overall drop on last year's shopper numbers of 10.3 per cent.
Natasha Burton, FootFall spokeswoman, commented: "The UK's high street retailers struggled for their share of consumer spend this Easter, with the battle closely fought between homes and gardens, leisure activities and the high street.
"Despite holding numerous high-profile events and mid-season sales in a last-ditch attempt to draw shoppers indoors, the anticipated warm weather proved more enticing to consumers."
However, when shoppers did spend, it appears to have largely have been on garden machines and other tools for sprucing up the home, while enjoying the sun as they did.
