Dorset man publishes coastal gardening book

A keen gardener from Coombe Keynes in Dorset has launched a new literary guide for horticulturalists maintaining gardens in coastal areas of the UK and abroad.
John Bickerton has leant his expertise in seafront gardening to help advise green-fingered Brits on the art of cultivating land exposed to extreme growing conditions, the Dorset Echo reports.
Speaking to the regional newspaper, he commented: "I've been a passionate gardener since childhood.
"As a teenager, while at boarding school near Lyme Regis, I spent most of my free time down in the under cliffs studying and enjoying the geology, fauna and flora of the seaside environment."
According to Home & Garden TV, fluctuating weather and salty air synonymous with coastal conditions can make gardening by the sea difficult.
The Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends hedges such as Ilex aquifolium, Olearia macrodonta, Escallonia macrantha and fuchsia for coastal gardens.
