Allotment holders show fruit and veg at town show

Monday, September 01 2008 17:33:18 by Alison Patel

Gardening News Alison Patel writes: Allotment holders in Northampton gathered together to display the 'best of British produce' at the Delapre Family Show, the Northmapton Chronicle and Echo reports.

The event which took place over the weekend had 50 stalls and included plant, vegetable and animal groups.

It was organised by the Northampton Allotment Network and the Friends of Delapre Abbey and the local paper said the event was "an attempt to revive the spirit of the old town show".

Pat Johnson, field secretary of Broadmead avenue allotments, said: "There has been a big upsurge in the amount of allotment holders in the town.

"Two years ago a lot of the fields were empty but now there are 35 on the waiting list."

She explained that people are keen to eat the vegetables they have harvested and she explained that the demographic of allotment holders is changing and there are an increasing number of young families interested in growing and harvesting their own food.
