Expert advice on how to cultivate foxtail grasses

Tuesday, August 19 2008 18:48:48 by Daniel Shane

Gardening News Daniel Shane writes: A leading expert in plant cultivation has provided a series of tips on how to get the best results when growing foxtail grasses.

Elspeth Thomson, writing for the Telegraph newspaper's website, has offered the hints for one of the fussiest garden flowers of them all.

Ms Thompson wrote in her blog: "[Known] … for their graceful arching from and brush-like inflorescences, pennisetums are among the most eye-catching of the ornamental grasses that have become fashionable in recent years."

One of the best pieces of advice given by Ms Thompson is to plant foxtail grasses in a "warm, sunny spot" with "good winter drainage", and that they should be moved to a greenhouse when the winter frost kicks in.

If this seems too much like hard work, she also says that foxtail grasses can grow equally well in containers, with less of the "kerfuffle", as she puts it.

The foxtail grass is popular with gardeners in the UK, but can often be accidentally killed by only the slightest of human touches.
