Rare frog is given protection by minister for wildlife
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, August 19 2008 18:51:50 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: A rare frog that croaks in a 'northern accent' is set to be given legal protection upon its reintroduction to the UK.
Joan Ruddock, the minister for wildlife, awarded protection to the pool frog shortly after it was reintroduced to the UK.
Under the new measures, harming, killing or stealing the endangered frog will become illegal at the start of October.
Ms Ruddock said: "The UK's native species need our support and I hope today's announcement will give the pool frog a secure future.
Native pool frogs died out in the 1990s after its population dwindled to just one location in Norfolk.
Natural England's amphibian specialist, Jim Foster, said: "Early signs are encouraging that the pool frogs are settling in to the current release site."
He added that he thought the new law would give the amphibian a bright future.
Scientists originally discovered that the frog was 'northern' after comparing its mating calls with those of Scandinavian frogs.
