Homeless win award for work on National Trust property garden
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, August 13 2008 18:01:14 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: A group of homeless people have been handed an award in recognition of the work they have done to protect the country's heritage, 24dash.com reported.
Supported by homeless charity Centrepoint the group was invited to be part of a 12 week course funded by the London Development Agency.
During their course the group spent some time at Scotney Castle working with the National Trust's gardening team on specific conservation projects.
Paul Micklewright, head gardener at Scotney Castle, said: "The group of young people from Centrepoint has shown tremendous commitment and hard work and I congratulate them on winning the award for heritage."
Whilst at Scotney the group was involved in a number of different projects including laying turf around the manor house and building raised wood chip paths.
They were also required to work to sympathetically update some of the garden's original features and helped to renovate the old Victorian vegetable patches.
The project included restoring an original walled garden to its former glory, "to ensure that one of Englands most beautiful and popular gardens is kept immaculate and traditional".
