A garden that celebrates culture
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Thursday, August 07 2008 15:35:44 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: To celebrate the fact that it has been named this year's Capital of Culture, a garden at the Southport flower show will be celebrating Liverpool's architecture.
The Liverpool Echo reported that the garden was created by Peter Cowell, a gardening student that has recreated the River Mersey and a Liver Bird in his display.
Commenting on the fact that the show will also feature designs that are based on Liverpool's docks and the Grand National, the show's chief executive David Jackson said: "All our gardens feature Liverpool landmarks and highlights of the city."
Southport flower show is the largest independent event of its kind in the country and the organisers are expecting to have 800,000 people coming through their gates this year between August 21st and August 24th.
Scientists and horticulturalists at the Royal Horticultural Show (RHS) warned that temperatures in the south-east could reach 41C by 2080 and may be only a few degrees cooler up north.
Guy Barter, head of horticultural advisory services at the RHS, has predicted that Kent, which has been traditionally known as the garden of England, may become the "vineyard of England", with Mediterranean-sized fruits.
