A 10-year-old wins Wigan gardening competition
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Thursday, July 31 2008 18:56:33 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: A ten-year-old boy has been named Wigan's best gardener after securing the top prize in the Wigan Observer's competition.
Wigan In Bloom winner Lewis Gray started gardening three years ago and designed the prize winning garden himself choosing both the plants and the layout, Wigan News reported.
Describing the moment he won, Lewis said: "I was at tennis when my mum came and told me I had won, I was really happy."
Lewis was inspired to get involved in gardening by his grandfather who was a keen horticulturist and gave his grandson a hanging basket to plant flowers in when he was just seven.
The award-winner now sells his hanging baskets to Wigan residents and works at a local nursery at the weekends.
Lewis grows his own vegetables as well as creating hanging baskets and tending to plants, Wigan News reported.
He has said he will use his £150 prize money to buy seeds that he plans to use to grow his own bedding plants for next year's show.
