Gardening student wins flower show competition

Laura Topp writes: A prestigious gardening award has been scooped by a young student from Chorley.
This year's Southport Flower Show Student Garden Design competition was won by Peter Cowell, who designed an outside space which was inspired by Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture.
Mr Cowell used a variety of materials to create his design, including old railway sleepers and stained glass, local newspaper the Chorley Citizen reported.
The 23-year-old did a large amount of research into the history of Liverpool and set about designing a garden which reflected its old and new architectural elements.
He was presented with a £1,000 cash prize for his winning design, as well as £5,000 which he can use to help launch his gardening career.
Speaking to the newspaper, Mr Cowell said that he was "delighted" to have come first in the competition.
He explained: "I love going to Southport Flower Show every year, it is a great place for a day out and I hope visitors will enjoy seeing my garden there."
Mr Cowell is currently studying for a BA in Garden Design at Myerscough College.
