Bristol Zoo Gardens open new butterfly exhibition
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, July 22 2008 15:30:47 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: Gardeners who are keen wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that Bristol Zoo Gardens has just opened a new butterfly forest exhibition.
The exhibit houses tropical plants and trees and anywhere between 200 to 300 butterflies at any one time.
Warren Spencer, curator of invertebrates at Bristol Zoo, explained the appeal of the new exhibit: "It's a bit like stepping through the wardrobe into Narnia."
A variety of plants that are suitable for either butterfly feeding or egg laying have been used in the "forest" and the curator hopes that the butterflies will eventually be able to propagate themselves with little interaction from staff.
Visitors will be able to see between 15 and 25 different species from the Blue Morphp to the "enormous" Brown Owl butterflies.
Exhibitors hope the project will also bring publicity to the plight of the butterfly. Warren Spencer believes that many reasons including "changing farming techniques and climate change" could be to blame.
