Gardening tips for the week ahead

Friday, July 18 2008 18:16:42 by Alison Patel

Gardening News Alison Patel writes: Gardeners have been told to use this weekend and next week to dispose of their perennial weeds, mow spring meadows and dead head fading blooms.

That is the advice from the RHS Horticultural Advisory Service, the Telegraph has reported.

According to the RHS, perennial weeds should be strewn in the open, "baked in the sun" for a week and then used for compost.

Mowing spring meadows from this month onwards will encourage wild flowers to grow next year and the first cuttings should be left for a week so that the "seeds drop back to the ground".

The next time people mow their meadows the non-flowering cuttings "can be raked off or collected in the mower cuttings box for composting".

Those that want to improve the appearance of flowers and encourage more flowers by preventing seed from setting should ensure they remove all faded blooms from flowering plants, the RHS advises.

Repeat-flowering roses (including many hybrid teas, floribundas and modern climbers), fuchsias, penstemons and dahlias should all benefit from dead-heading.
