Laura Topp writes: Third Sector minister Phil Hope has met with volunteers at a garden project in Sydenham in recognition of the important role unpaid help has played in the National Health Service (NHS).
Mr Hope visited the Sydenham Gardening Project on Friday (June 27th) to celebrate 60 years of volunteering in the NHS and "rolled up his sleeves" to give them a hand planting vegetables.
The Sydenham Gardening Project is a charity volunteering initiative partially funded by the NHS and the garden contains numerous varieties of veg including pumpkins, courgettes and lettuces.
He also met with volunteers at the University College Hospital in Lewisham.
Tim Walker, director of Sydenham Gardens, was extremely pleased that last Friday's visit from Mr Hope took place.
He said: "We are delighted at the interest the minister has in the project and it is great to see him engage so willingly with the volunteers and staff. Volunteering is and always has been critical to our community charity."
The NHS came was officially implemented on July 5th, 1948 and has been supported by volunteers ever since.
