Scheme to showcase gardens and support charities
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Friday, June 20 2008 18:23:18 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: Accomplished gardeners have been given the chance to show off their skills whilst raising money for charity.
The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) allows gardeners to showcase their work in their Yellow Book guide to 3,600 private gardens in England and Wales.
Members of the public will pay a nominal fee to visit gardens listed in the book and that money will then go to charity.
Chantel Scriven of NGS explained how the scheme has helped to raise millions of pounds for numerous charities: "By sharing their gardens with the public, NGS members have raised £40 million for nursing, caring and gardening charities, with the last 10 years alone seeing £22 million distributed to good causes."
NGS do not specify any size of garden but entrants, they say, must be able to offer visitors a minimum of 45 minutes of interest and be able to talk knowledgably about their gardens.
Entrants can decide which dates and times their gardens will be open and the organisers say they would prefer if the gardeners could provide tea and cake to visitors.
