Organic roses must be tough
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, June 18 2008 18:51:13 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: Gardeners that are keen to grow their roses organically will be well aware of the dangers of their perennial shrubs succumbing to blackspot.
The gardener's usual chemical tools go against the organic grain so often "natural" roses have to be abandoned to disease.
Writing in the Telegraph's gardening section, Val Bourne has come up with a list of "bomb-proof" organic options for those gardeners that are keen to keep things chemical-free.
Val Bourne found some natural roses by mistake. The team that looks after the British Association of Rose Breeders (BARB) Rose Trials does not have time to spray and judge the entrants so they are "au naturel" by default.
According to Ms Bourne's research the following roses are hardy and worth investing in: the Silver Ghost, Temptress, Golden Gate, Cinderella, Lancashire, the imaginatively named Buxom Beauty, Champagne Moments, Red Finesse, Summer Beauty and Caribbean Dawn.
Roses are perennial shrubs or vines of the genus Rosa, within the rosaceae family that contains over 100 species. Most roses are native to Asia.
