Grow your own and beat the credit crunch
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, June 17 2008 18:33:52 by Alison Patel
Alison Patel writes: As an increasing number of gardeners are growing their own vegetables in an attempt to beat the credit crunch, an expert advises that it is not too late to join the DIY kitchen garden revolution.
Writing for the Telegraph, Elspeth Thompson noted that a number of mail-order companies are offering gardeners "ready-to-plant plots".
Companies offer collections of vegetables for each season and although, Ms Thompson warns, growing produce this way is more expensive than doing it from seed, it "can still be good value".
The key, she says, is to pick what you grow with care. One such vegetable that produces "maximum return per seedling" is lettuce leaves.
Peppers, tomatoes, and purple-sprouting broccoli will also keep reproducing once you have cut and eaten them.
For the more discerning gardener, there are a number of nurseries that provide a range of gourmet vegetable plants such as organic pea-shoots or "Tondo d Piacenza" courgettes.
Gardeners interested in growing tomatoes in hanging baskets should, according to the Times, invest in a variety called "Tumbler" which has "cascading stems covered in bright yellow flowers and masses of sweet-tasting, deep red, cherry-sized fruits".
