A fit gardener will remain injury-free

Alison Patel writes: Those who have been unfortunate enough to fall prey to a gardening related sprain will know the importance of keeping fit to avoid injury whilst mowing the lawn or digging out weeds.
According to Bunny Guinness writing for the Telegraph, an hour's gardening can use as many calories as jogging four miles, so it is certainly worthwhile but not if a gardener is injured in the process.
Jacqueline Knox, physiotherapist and Pilates instructor for the Olympic rowing squad met Bunny for some gardening advice and said that she sees an increasing number of gardeners with injuries in the Spring.
Gardening, Jacqueline said, often: "Uses techniques that aggravate backs, shoulders and necks in particular and they garden in concentrated bursts when not fit."
Working with Jacqueline, Bunny has come up with ways to avoid injury. Warming up with strengthening and body balancing exercises before helps, as does doing stretches afterwards.
It is also vitally important to keep the spine "in a neutral position rather than slumped forward".
Some exercise equipment manufacturers have realized that there is a market for outdoor work-out tools and now produce outdoor cross trainers for keep fit fanatics.
