Gardening sales boosted by May sunshine
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, June 11 2008 17:43:06 by Laura Topp
Laura Topp writes: An unseasonably warm May and a hot Bank Holiday have helped to boost sales of gardening equipment.
DIY retailers reported an increase in profits last month, figures from the British Retail Consortium revealed.
In addition, items such as barbeques and food were sold in higher quantities as people made the most of the good weather.
Commenting on the boom areas, Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: "After several mostly miserable months, warm sunny weather finally arrived in early May and helped lift customers' gloom".
It wasn't all good news though as the data also indicated that consumers were still reluctant to spend money on their homes.
Sales of furniture and homewares were down from last year and a new BRC survey has revealed that one in five of those questioned do not have the money for discretionary spending.
However, Kingfisher Plc, Europe's largest home improvement retailer and owner of B&Q, recorded an unexpected gain in first-quarter profit after offering fewer promotions and cutting costs, Bloomberg reported last week.
