Home grown produce increasingly popular among high earners
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, June 11 2008 13:47:47 by Laura Topp
Laura Topp writes: Growing fruit and vegetables is becoming an increasingly popular pastime among the UK's high earners.
That is according to a new survey conducted by American Express, which revealed that 30 per cent of those questioned said that they planned to start growing their own.
In addition, 11 per cent of respondents said that they are already producing food.
The Centurion Luxury Living Index also found that sourcing food items which are ethically produced and sourced is considered "essential" by two thirds of those surveyed.
Locally produced food was considered important by 83 per cent, followed by organic produce (75 per cent).
Commenting on the findings, celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal told the Independent: "We used to spend our money showing people how much money weve got; now, were spending our money on supporting our moral concerns."
The Centurion Luxury Living Index examines the current and future spending patterns of some of American Express' most affluent customers.
