Legal action threatened for more allotments in Wales
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Friday, May 30 2008 23:01:22 by Arash Hekmat
Arash Hekmat writes: A gardening organisation has warned Welsh authorities that it may be forced to take legal action if more is not done to meet the country's growing demand for allotments, it has been reported.
According to the BBC, the National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG) said that members' patience was beginning to wear thin, after it was revealed that some Welsh local authorities have waiting lists of more than 1,000 for a space on an allotment.
Speaking to BBC programme 'Eye on Wales', Alan Rees, of the NSALG, said: "At some stage our members are going to want us to take on an authority for not carrying out their duties and responsibilities within the legislation."
After years of decline, allotments are now seeing their biggest resurgence since The Second World War, when effective campaigns such as 'Dig For Victory', helped keep morale high on the home front.
Television chef Jamie Oliver is preparing to film a new programme from his eco-kitchen in Rotherham, in which he will teach people how to make ten nutritious, low-cost meals using organic and home-grown ingredients and techniques implemented by the Ministry of Food during wartime.
