Vegetable growing increasingly popular in Scotland
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Thursday, May 29 2008 18:38:23 by Arash Hekmat
Arash Hekmat writes: With gardens enjoying something of a resurgence in Scotland, a growing number of people north of the border are now growing their own vegetables, it has been reported.
According to the Press and Journal, vegetable seed sales now outnumber flower seed sales in Scotland for the first time since the Second World War.
While there is no definitive reason as to why home growing vegetables has suddenly become so popular, it is clear that TV chefs such as Jamie Oliver have raised awareness of the unhealthy ingredients that are found in processed foods.
But with vegetables definitely en vogue, Gardening Scotland 2008, the country's largest gardening event, will be addressing the theme of sustainable, ecological living when it takes place in Edinburgh this week, the newspaper reports.
Among the more intriguing attractions at the festival, a special fashion show will be staged by students from a local school displaying a range of gardening clothes made from biodegradable materials such as hemp, which can be disposed of on the compost heap.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that three beautiful gardens in the village of Bretherton in Chorley, Lancashire, will open to the public on Sunday June 8th, in order to raise money for the British Red Cross.
