'Green roofing' can benefit the garden
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, May 28 2008 18:17:38 by Arash Hekmat
Arash Hekmat writes: Sedum matting is the ideal way for people to transform an outside space into an attractive landscape without having to put in lots of time, money or effort, a gardening expert has claimed.
Writing for website Garden and Green, Angela Lambert, of QLawns, explained that so-called 'green roofing' has a variety of benefits, whether it is used in the garden or on the roof.
The matting, which is covered with a leafy sedum plant, has been used throughout Europe for years because of its easy maintenance. Once unrolled and affixed to a surface, it does not need mowing and only requires feeding with fertiliser twice a year.
Ms Lambert explained that green roof are becoming more popular in the UK, as shown by the fact that they have a growing presence at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and that celebrity gardeners now often talk about roof planting.
With new space at a premium in busy urban areas, sedum matting can really expand upon the green space available to a gardener, while it can just as easily be used to surround a water feature and disguise pond liner.
Meanwhile, the gardens at Rockingham Castle, in Corby, Northamptonshire, have enjoyed a full bloom this year, following an ambitious project to create a rose garden within the site's 18 acre grounds, according to local news sources.
