Volunteers halfway through Wigan garden project looking for more help

A group of volunteers working on the restoration of a garden at a stately home in Wigan are half-way through their project but are in need of more support.
The green-fingered helpers are working with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to transform the rundown garden and are creating various wonderful outside features, including a vegetable garden, an orchard and areas of wildflowers.
They are one year into the two-year project, which will be open to the public when it is finished, but are now calling for extra support, Wigan Today reports.
Kath Godfrey, BTCV project officer in Wigan, told the local paper: "One of the benefits of volunteering is that you sometimes get access to special sites such as this which aren't yet open to the general public.
"We have a volunteer group on Thursdays and weekends and a number of youth, church and special needs groups. There's something for everyone!"
The garden, managed by Wigan and Leisure Culture Trust, will be open to the public after it is finished next year.
The project is being funded the BTCV's youth programme and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
