Sporting garden wins silver medal at Chelsea

Arash Hekmat writes: A garden design based on the Welsh city of Cardiff's sporting heritage has been awarded with a silver medal at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
The Cardiff International Sports Village Garden is centered around a ten- foot high floral rugby player taking a conversion kick, according to the South Wales Echo.
Flowers and plants were arranged to look like golf courses, cricket fields and football pitches to mark the major sporting events taking place in Cardiff over the next few years.
The garden was created by Mo Dorken, Cardiff council landscaper, who won a Silver Gilt at last year's show for her Dr Who-inspired garden design.
She told the newspaper: "It was a bit daunting to create these different areas but it did give us the opportunity to use all types of different plants.
"Chelsea's the most prestigious horticultural event in the world."
Meanwhile, a councillor in the town of Wigan has saved a number of bedding plants that were deemed surplus to requirements by leisure bosses and were due to be thrown out.
The Wigan Evening Post reports that Hindley Green councillor Bob Brierly has donated the flowers to the homes of pensioners and schools across the region.
