New approach to environment needed to help protect England's wildlife

Tuesday, May 20 2008 18:08:29 by Ben Jarvis

Gardening News Ben Jarvis writes: The effects of climate change, population growth, pollution and property development on England's environment need to be considered when planning how best to care for it, a new survey has indicated.

According to a report from Natural England, entitled State of the Natural Environment, the richness of the country's environment has reduced in the last 50 years, with levels of creatures like butterflies and wading birds on the decline.

The study revealed that signs of neglect are visible in a fifth of the countryside, which is having a detrimental effect on native species such as the bumblebee and the red squirrel.

As such, the organisation has warned that a new approach is needed for the management of the environment to ensure the survival of wildlife.

Helen Phillips, chief executive of Natural England, said: "If we don't act now, there's a real danger some of our most precious wildlife will be lost forever and our lives will be poorer for it."

Last week, the Scotsman reported that some species of bumblebee are under threat in Scotland as a result of the diminishing numbers of wild flowers.
