Chelsea exhibit to examine future of gardening

James Porter writes: An exhibit which explores what an English garden could look like in the future is to be showcased at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
The 2050 garden has two areas, one of a garden in a "low emissions future" and one which details a "high emissions future".
It has been created by a team from the University of East Anglia which has been studying the effects of climate change on various plants and flowers in the UK, EDP24 reports.
In the low emissions garden, the researchers have included things which are currently growing in UK plots, such as the European fan palm chamaerops humilis and loquat and is meant to show what a garden would look like if global levels of CO2 are reduced.
The high emissions garden examines what would happen if CO2 levels continue to rise, and features plants which are more adapt to coping in a more capricious climate with variable rain and winds.
Dr Saffron O'Neill told the local portal: "People cherish their gardens as much as their homes and we are showing what climate change might mean for gardeners by 2050, and why.
"A lot of people find it quite hard to think so far in the future so our garden starts with a typical cottage from the 1950s which includes things such as Cox's apple. You will still be able to grow many of the species we have today in years to come but the Cox's for example, which requires frost to form buds, will be harder to grow because in the future, certainly in a high emissions future, we will have a lower number of frost days."
