New visitor centre to open at Scottish botanical garden

Megan Smith writes: A botanical garden in the Scottish Borders is set to benefit from a brand new visitor centre.

The £1.6 million centre will officially be opened at the Dawyck Botanic Garden by rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead.

Mr Lochhead expressed his hopes that access to some of the more unique habitats located in Scotland would be improved by the opening of the centre, the BBC reported.

He explained: "We recognise Dawyck not only plays a key role in the research and conservation of RBGE (the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh) but in the life of the local community. By improving our offering of educational and cultural events and exhibitions our aim is both to communicate science and to engage the public by providing a quality visitor experience."

The RGBE is in charge of running Dawyck Botanic Garden. RGBE Regius Keeper Prof Stephen Blackmore added that visitors could find the site even more pleasurable to visit as a result of the new centre.

As noted by the BBC, visitor numbers to the garden are expected to rise from 21,000 to 30,000 in the next decade thanks to the centre.
