Kipling garden set for new roses

Friday, May 09 2008 12:33:15 by Leigh Jackson

Gardening News Leigh Jackson writes: A number of new roses are set to be planted in the Rose Garden at Bateman's, once the home of acclaimed writer Rudyard Kipling.

The East Sussex-based outdoor space will have a number of new roses planted with many of the plants sponsored by members of the public, the BBC reports.

Some of the roses have been planted in memory of workers at the garden, while others have been sponsored by people that have enjoyed the outdoor space over the years.

The re-planting of the garden, which was designed by Kipling in 1907, has been spearheaded by the National Trust.

Meanwhile, Bateman's is not the only outdoor space set to undergo changes. Under a new scheme launched by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund, a number of public parks will also be renovated.

Some £11 million of lottery funding will be provided to complete the scheme.
