Leigh Jackson writes: Amateur horticulturalists up and down the country are being offered the chance to win new equipment for their garden by composting.
As part of a Recycle Now scheme, gardeners who purchase a compost bin during Compost Awareness Week, could win £50 of garden centre vouchers, which could be put towards the cost of a new lawnmower, chainsaw or brushcutter.
A spokesman for Recycle Now revealed that the aim of the scheme was to foster a new attitude to conserving the planet.
"We can all help the planet and keep our gardens in bloom, by home composting our kitchen and garden waste or using peat-free composts containing recycled materials," he said.
"Home composting is a simple and cheap way of dealing with up to a third of a typical family's waste bin, and it is a brilliant way to help the environment.
"It's not just fruit and vegetable peelings that you can compost - toilet roll tubes, coffee grounds, tea bags, and egg boxes will all add nutrients to the mix," the spokesman added.
Compost Awareness Week runs from May 4th to May 8th.
