Emily Jenkins writes: Richmond Council is warning its residents about the increase of a new moth in the region which could be harmful to humans.
Oak processionary moths have been spotted on trees in Richmond and south-west London in their caterpillar form in previous years and the authorities are asking people to report any sightings this summer, the BBC reports.
The caterpillar can cause rashes, conjunctivitis and breathing difficulties in humans, as well as damaging the oak trees they live on.
Explaining the threat the of the creature, councillor Martin Elegorn told the broadcaster.
"While there is no cause for alarm, the caterpillars can cause unpleasant symptoms in anyone who comes into contact with their hairs," he said.
"If left unchecked they can also do considerable damage to oak trees," the councillor added.
Meanwhile, according to This Is Cheshire, gardeners across Middlewich are busy preparing for this year's Middlewich in Bloom contest.
