Community workers scoop garden award

Emily Jenkins writes: A team of community workers have been presented with a regional accolade for their work on the regeneration of a garden in South Tyneside.

The Boldon Neighbourhood Management Team and Youth Project scooped the Tyne and Wear High Sheriff Award for their nifty work with lawnmowers, hedgetrimmers and brushcutters and were presented with a cash prise by Jonny Wilkinson, the Shields Gazette reports.

Maria Anderson, manager of the team, revealed that the prize was justification for? the hard work that went into the garden.

"We are very pleased to have won this award," she said. "It recognises all the hard work that has been put in by both local volunteers and the young people, into making the garden an excellent venue for school activities and community events.

"This award will help us to continue this project for the benefit of the Boldon area," Ms Anderson added.

Meanwhile, the Riverside Community Garden in Wales has been presented with the 2008 Award for Food Action Locally for its growth of organic produce.
