Edinburgh 'secret' garden opens to the public
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, April 08 2008 17:25:04 by Arash Hekmat
Arash Hekmat writes: A 'secret' garden in Edinburgh has been opened to the public after 238 years of seclusion.
St Andrew Square Garden, which has a history stretching back to 1770, had previously only been open to residents and businesses in the surrounding area.
However, the garden first built by famous Scottish architect James Craig has recently undergone a renovation and it is now hoped that the site will host public events in the future.
David Nicholson, chairman of Edinburgh City Centre Management (ECCM), to organisation that proposed to open the garden up, said: "The redevelopment of St Andrew Square Garden has created a new high-quality space right in the heart of Edinburgh's historic city centre."
As well as a shallow pool and a beautifully restored statue of Lord Melville, the garden now also contains a modern pavilion, which houses the first Coffee Republic Delicatessen in central Edinburgh.
A network of pathways has also been constructed throughout the garden, and new lighting installed.
