Hope for Cherrybank despite closure
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Monday, April 07 2008 16:54:09 by Martin Rivers
Martin Rivers writes: Perth's Cherrybank Gardens may stay open to the public despite having been being officially closed down, the BBC is reporting.
Scotland's Garden Trust (SGT) had been meeting with representatives from Perth and Kinross Leisure in a bid to find a way of preserving the centre, which is home to Europe's largest collection of heather.
The gardens were shut on March 31st after their owners failed to secure lottery funding for them, resulting in 14 job losses and prompting some 3,000 people to sign a petition to demand they reopen.
Responding the public outcry, SGT has promised to keep the gardens open in the short-term as details of a "compromise" with Perth and Kinross Council and the leisure trust are hammered out.
SGT chief executive Peter Fairlie commented: "We had a positive meeting and I look forward to further discussions once all the parties have had the opportunity to reflect on our proposals.
"SGT hopes there is a way the heather garden can be reopened to the public, and I believe what we proposed is a workable solution for all parties."
