Grant for hostel garden regeneration
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, April 02 2008 18:18:45 by Arash Hekmat
Arash Hekmat writes: Housing and regeneration agency LHA has donated £500 to a group of youngsters from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, to transform the gardens surrounding a local hostel.
The volunteers, aged 16-23 years-old, joined forces with staff from the Prince's Trust to create a wildlife garden at Bassetts Court, planting fruit bushes, a vegetable bed and flower borders.
Residents of the hostel, which provides shelter for homeless people aged 16-60, also helped in the work, creating a pond and a log pile to encourage local wildlife to flourish. The £500 also went towards a brick barbeque kit, bird tables and a bench.
According to Housing News, Gill Jackson, head of corporate services at the Mayday Trust, which manages the hostel, said: "Since Bassetts Court was refurbished last year staff have seen a marked improvement in both the morale and behaviour of the residents.
"We hope the changes to the garden area will assist in promoting this positive attitude and help social interaction amongst the residents and the local community. It's a bonus that the conservation area will help the environment too."
LHA recently embarked on a new venture with housing charity Family First in Nottingham, to collect and recycle furniture and electrical items discarded in socially rented homes and gardens.
