Leeds unveils memorial garden
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, April 01 2008 17:27:01 by Tony Domingo
Tony Domingo writes: A garden has been unveiled in Leeds that pays tribute to one of the city's greatest politicians.
The Lord Merlyn-Rees Riverside Garden, situated in Hunslet, was opened by city officials on Friday with the help of Lady Rees, in commemoration of its namesake.
Councillor Ann Castle said: "I had a lot of respect for Lord Rees and remember the impact he had on Leeds.
"Needless to say, this garden will be an asset to the area and once regeneration starts in earnest and more people start to move into the area, it will prove a highly popular attraction which will allow Lord Rees' memory and legacy to live on."
Laurence Morgan, general manager for British Waterways Yorkshire, added: "Leeds waterways are a valuable community resource and this garden will provide a new and tranquil resting place for visitors along the waterfront corridor in Leeds."
Lord Rees was a Labour MP for South Leeds from 1963 until 1992, but died in 2006 at the age of 85. During his illustrious career, he also served as Home and Northern Ireland Secretary.
