Gardening needn't be expensive

Spring is the time of the year when many people turn their attentions to the garden, but whatever improvements you may have planned, sprucing up an outdoor space does not have to be expensive.
A recent article in the Telegraph highlights a number of useful cost saving tips from buying smaller plants that will grow and bloom when properly looked after, to taking cuttings from friends and families.
While some of these methods may not yield immediate results, the payoff can be much more rewarding if you have had a hand in growing the plants, whether from seed or cutting.
For those who do decide to buy larger plants, it advises to divide it up into two or three plants, in order to fill a flower bed much quicker. Most perennial plants can easily and quickly be increased in this way.
It is also worth keeping an eye out for special offers at DIY and garden centres, with bargains usually there to be found at this time of year. Environmentally conscious gardeners could also consider making their own compost, a simple procedure that also cuts down on household waste.
A word of warning from insurance company RIAS however for those planning on spending more time in the garden over the next few weeks, it is important to make sure that garden tools and items are properly put away, so as not to invite opportunistic thieves.
