Garden survey reveals increase in Finch numbers
Mowdirect news > Gardening News

The number of finches inhabiting people's gardens is at the highest level in more than five years, despite the fact that total bird numbers have declined drastically.
These are just some of the findings from the largest annual garden wildlife survey, which was conducted by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), with the help of 400,000 keen gardeners.
The RSPB said that the number of birds spotted in the average UK garden had fallen by one fifth since 2004, attributing the change to warmer winters, declining levels of hedgerows and other natural habitats, and the growing use of pesticides.
While certain species were found to be in decline, warmer weather also accounted for the increasing number of finches that have appeared this year, with the goldfinch in particular finding solace in people's gardens.
The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch has been providing the organisation with valuable information about many different species of common birds in the UK since 1979.
In the following three decades, the number of house sparrows counted has fallen by 52 per cent, while the number of chaffinches seen has increased by 36 per cent.
